Childrens Toy Ocarina

The BIG Consultant was asked by Ocarina Originators and Wind Jewels World Music to develop an injection moulded children's ocarina for schools.

From a design brief, the toy product was drawn up in 3D CAD, utilising clay models and careful development of the internal sound chamber and fipple.

    

Once the internal details were correct, and the volume of the internal chamber was calculated, the fipple (or wind break on the flute part) was designed to neatly fit over the split line of the injection moulding tool. A two part design was chosen to ease manufacture, allow a range of fun colours, and to make assembly easy and cost effective.

Engineering part and assembly drawings were produced for all the components and delivered for manufacture and assembly.

A computer generated STL rapid prototyping model was produced (left) to test the design prior to tooling and is an overnight process, before providing the packaging (right) relevant brochures, literature and marketing materials for the company for their new product.
