Tooling for MG's new MINI

"We asked 'The BIG Consultant' to draw a 3D Solid Model of our injection moulding tool to enable us to utilise rapid tooling techniques. The complex part required a high level of accuracy and we wanted to produce the best for our client, MG Rover Cars, in order to tender other contracts."

Phil Court, Managing Director of Court Engineering.

From Japanese drawings we were required to draw the lens tool for the speedometer are of the car. A major difficulty was that the component has complex compound curvature, and was difficult to represent as a IGES model. This was compounded by the lack of clarity in the original drawings.

Once the component was drawn and checked with the client, Court Engineering, the part had to be enlarged in order to calculate shrinkage and adjust the size of the impression accordingly, before other features were added.

With this contract there was no room for error as this would be extremely costly and would upset a highly important customer.

The files were converted to IGES and DXF for final machining and assembly.
